You might know me as a model but that’s just something I do to pay my way through Veterinary School. Okay, not really. But I do have some advice to give my fellow Dachshunds about the best way to take care of their backs. 1 in 4 Dachshunds will develop a back problem such as IVDD (intervertebral disc disease). In extreme cases, IVDD can lead to paralysis so here are my top tips for staying healthy and avoiding injury.
Tip #1 No jumping
Although fun, jumping from heights such as couches can put pressure on your back and lead to injury. Tell your humans to invest in a ramp so you can still get up on to the couch whenever you want to watch your favorite TV show. Added bonus – these ramps are really fun to run up and down.

Tip #2 No climbing up and down stairs
Climbing up and down stairs will also put pressure on your back. When your humans train you to avoid stairs you’ll get lots of treats so try to keep this process going for as long as possible.
When you need to get up and down the stairs make sure you get a human to chauffeur you.
Tip #3 Maintain a healthy weight
The less weight us Dachies have to carry around, the less strain we put on our backs. So less, “my diet starts tomorrow” and more “walkies”.
Running along the beach is a great way to stay in shape.
Unfortunately, you can take all of the necessary precautions and still develop a back issue so it’s very important to tell your humans to take out Pet Insurance.
